DD seemed to be the favourite on paper against the Kiss of Death, but when both mummies were unavailable (Ramses the 5th missing his niggling for the first time this season, after not missing since last time DD faces the coach of Kiss in last seasons 3rd place match against Black Widows, and Ra missing his niggling the first time he ever had to pass it), DD seemed in serious troubles. Fortunately they were über lotto for the rest of the game!
As if this was not enough, Kiss had obtained an extra blitzer when a crazy fan joined their team before the match, and a wizard was ready on the side line.
The only hope DD had was Count Luthor the Vampire, whom had been hired for the match, and he proved to be more than his moneys worth.
DD received and Luthor had the ball in a cage, and the cage tried to change sides to find a hole in Kiss defence. DD has recently lost both their dirty players, but nevertheless Squiil: a Zombie managed to foul Kiss’ dirty player Comanche KO before he could do any harm.
However, toward the end of the half the first blood was drawn by Fruit Cake who killed rookie ghoul Cynical Cypher. But Count Luthor also managed to do some damage even with the ball in his hand, and he made two KO, before he ran towards the EZ staying just outside lightning bolt distance.
In their attempt to stop him, Sioux decided to foul a ghoul, but even though he failed to stun him the ref threw him out! And then Luthor could have strolled in for a TD, but instead he decided to blitz down Cheyenne on the way to the EZ, BHing him in the process. 1-0 for DD.
The elfs still had a chance of a one turn TD, and after using the RR to keep the zombie to be pushed on his feet, the elves managed to push him 3 times before taking him down on a clean in the fourth needed push. And then Dodge Viper caught the pass from Callaway and was on his way to 1-1. But although he knew how to avoid tackle players, he forgot about Enasni the Death Eater and his diving tackle, and when he dodged into two TZ he suddenly needed a 6, and when Enasni the Death Eater dived after him he went down giving DD the lead before 2nd half.
The fans were of course cheering for DD when they kicked to Kiss and since RR could be very important in a potentially tied over time this was great for DD.
Already in their first move did Luthor attack the cage, KOing killer Fruit Cake on his way to putting a TZ on Shredder. Then diving tackler Enasni the Death Eater came running in too along with yet another player. But that proved to be a dear mistake as Shredder got assist and lived up to his name when he shredded Enasni the Death Eater to death, on a blitz move getting away with the ball.
Still DD did not give up and with a gaze Luthor opened up for a two dice blitz on Shredder but even with RR he stayed up, and soon he was running free again handing the ball to Dodge Viper who ran out of reach. But with the Vampire on his heels he dared not wait and scored in turn 5.
DD then had 4 turns to score, but the ref took away one of these turns while the pitch was cleaned from debris after the mayhem. Still DD got a chance, and Luthor ran down pitch with the ball almost out of reach, and Kiss had not put any player within scoring reach so DD was sure of at least overtime. But then Kiss remembered their wizard and his lightning bolt took the vampire down. Then Kiss blitzed down remaining Ghoul Mean 'n' Green, and when that was not enough Mohegan fouled him SI. The ref did not even see this even though dirty player Comanche had fouled S. Finxter BH earlier that half. Luckily for DD the wight had regenerated. In the end the elfs surrounded the ball, but left it on the ground, and this still gave DD a chance to win in the last turn. If Mr. Stone Cold had managed a push back blitz, the ball could have bounced so Luthor could have scored, but the wight doubled a one on the go for it using up an expensive RR in the process. Both teams had one of these going in to overtime.
DD could still field 11 players but only two wights and the Vampire was left to move the ball with all 3 ghouls gone. Having only 4 turns the two wights attacked down pitch all they could, but Luthor made his first mistake when he failed the pickup. As he was just out of blitzing reach DD decided to save their RRs. They now had two as the fans once again cheered them on (very important should the score become a tie). The ball bounced out of reach for Kiss, and they did not want to push it to reach Luthor.
DD then managed to blitz S. Finxter free from TZ and Luthor completed a perfect long pass to him saving the RRs. The elfs then used up their last RR in their attempt to stop the wight. But that was in vain. Even though DD failed to give S. Finxter a two dice blitz, although the vamps gaze worked, he took the chance with a one turn blitz, and despite the fact that he only managed to push the crazy fan blitzer, he decided to go for the TD dodging past him and pushing it twice to take the lead 2-1 for DD without vesting a RR!
But now the elfs had two turns to tie in the first overtime half, but on the second block a double skull stopped their turn before they got any players within scoring range. In their rage dirty player Comanche fouled Wolf BH (and he failed to regenerate) but once again the ref spotted the fouling elves and send him off. 2-1 for DD in TDs 2-0 for DD in RR and 4 turns left.
DD could only field 9 players in their defence for this last crucial drive. The ball was kicked on the LoS as the elves came quick snapping out after their TD. But bad defence left a clear gap for Luthor to blitz the ball carrier Callaway. But only a pushback resulted and the RRs were too important to use. But it proved enough as the two DD guards caged the thrower from the other side. Before Callaway got a chance to dodge away, Dodge Viper fell on a go for it (getting himself killed had it not been for the apo). This gave DD many chances to take down the thrower and this time it worked in the first attempt, when S. Finxter BH him in a block. The ball bounced via the guarding skeleton Erik out in only one elf TZ, and this was removed by the skeleton himself. The ball was now lying free for Count Luthor, who tried to blitz his way out to it. But even though he got the player down, he failed to get a push and had to dodge out through a TZ, but he made it and pushing it once he got the ball, and one push more he were situated between the two guard players.
At this point Kiss gave up, and did not even put a player in scoring range, before yet another double skull send a blitzer to the ground. This gave DD a chance for 3-1 without risking a tie, so Luthor ran for the TD all by himself. As a bonus "Dead" Mortis SI Cherokee and by doing so he ensured that DD has a dirty player for next match.
Count Luthor was taken down by the elfs, but it was too late for Kiss, and DD ensured their place in the quarterfinals. Without any ghouls though as only remaining ghoul Mean 'n' Green must miss next match, but with the 20 k they earned (vs. 30 k for Kiss) they will once again be able to field Count Luthor (and maybe the mummies will show up, now that DD has proved they do not really need them?)
DD’s MVP went to guard skeleton Erik for his important part in stopping the elves last offence, and the MVP for Kiss of course went to the crazy fan who showed no fear throughout the match. Both teams fans stayed with their teams and no new fans were gained.
